Although this doesn’t fit with the date, this photograph was probably taken after he arrived from this trans-Atlantic flight and before his flight to Berlin-Tempelhof, Germany. Photo caption at Air Britain reads: This is the Luscombe which flew the Atlantic, both ways in 1953. The pilot was a San Francisco watchmaker named Peter Gluckmann. The Luscombe was temporarily fitted with extra wing tanks which were removed upon its return by which time the aerodrome he had left from had closed. The aircraft was fitted with a radio compass, its only navigation aid and flare dischargers for emergency landings at night. In 1999 I flew in this Luscombe whilst attending the Sentimental Journey event at Loch Haven PA with owner Richard Marcus who had her based in Canada as CF-EPO. Only remaining evidence of her Atlantic flight was four small circular blank covers where the flares had been. Excerpt of Tempelhof Airport from the aviation charts used by the US Air Force and civilian aircraft in 1954. It is likely that Gluckmann had this or something very similar on his aerial navigation chart. The middle runway, as per the 1953 aerial photo, is marked as closed. During the Berlin Air Lift three runways were in operation, with two additional runways being built with building rubble for their base. Source USAF via mil-airfields.de

This appears to be a press release promo photo for Bardahl Oil likely in 1960. Caption reads: PILOT PETER GLUCKMANN EXAMINES HIS J-35 BONANZA PLANE. 1960 Gluckmann, Peter (Pilot). Peter Gluckmann is shown beside his extensively modified J-35 Bonanza in which he is attempting to break the existing small plane distance record of 7668.48 miles. Gluckmann, the 34-year-old 'Flying Watchmaker' from San Francisco, hopes to solo non-stop Hong Kong to the western United States” a distance of more than 8000 miles. Lubricated with Bardahl additive oils, the plane will leave the Far East sometime between April 10 and May 1 when weather conditions are most favorable. Where he lands in the United States of America will again depend on the weather as he will select a landing site blessed with favorable tail winds.

Luscombe 8F C-FEPO (formerly N1838B) instrument panel. Likely one of the more sophisticated panels in a Luscombe. This was Peter Gluckmann’s bespoke design. Dark blue is original colour. Some of the instruments and much of the vacuum plumbing from 1953 are still intact. Compare to photo in 1953.

Flare tube ports installed by Peter Gluckmann. The internal bracketing for the flares has been removed. Standard on some aircraft like the Cessna 170 we can assume Gluckmann had these installed in case of ditching. The theory was that the aircraft would flip on impact with the water and that the pilot would then activate the flares to shoot upwards and alert someone for help.

What remains of the attachment bracing for the war surplus radio beacon Gluckmann installed on N1838B before his cross Atlantic flight. See next photo from the around 1953 in Ventura, CA to see how complex (and drag inducing) the antennas on the Luscombe were.

Red panel illumination light. This also appears to have been something that Peter Gluckmann installed in 1950 as part of changes to the instrument panel.

Continental C90 aircraft engine. Starboard side. This is not the original engine but one that Gluckmann had installed two months after his return from Europe. Given the timing of Continental ads which Gluckmann endorsed he most likely received this engine (model C-90-12, serial number 43775-3-12) in compensation.
